The Devil Missed His Connecting Flight to Georgia
Harry was taking a walk when a morose imp approached him.
“Hey,” it said listlessly. “You want to have a competition? If I win, I get your soul.”
“What if I win?” Harry asked.
“You get this aluminum kazoo. It’s a kazoo competition.”
“Shouldn’t it at least be gold?” Harry asked. “It’s my soul, after all.”
The imp wiped its eyes. “Only the Devil gets golden instruments,” it wailed. “This is all I can afford. Look, forget the soul. I’ll play you for your sense of decency.”
“Just take my incredulity,” Harry said. “I don’t think I need it anymore.”

This story was inspired by the following song.
At least it wasn’t a Paper Flute. Then he’d have to give his dignity.

At least the Devil knows the value of life, a future without self-respect must be hell.

I so love this David. How you went from soul, to, decency to incredulity. Just love that. It was like Let’s Make A deal, on Mars.

Thanks, my friend. Reminds me of the Get Smart routine in the original show, “Would you believe…?” that keeps getting smaller and smaller.

Funny, I like it. I was reminded of Charlie Daniels also; aging myself and exposing my cowboy roots.

It’s always interesting to see what people see when they look at the story prompt. I guess great minds think alike. Thanks for reading.

Super cute story! Love the banter of these characters! Thanks for sharing. Also used to listen to Charlie Daniels Band….could recite most of that song!

I did this once but he sent it back saying the deal was off. It appears that he figured out all he needed to to was wait and he’d get it anyway.
Fun story. 🙂

Somehow I think I would be doomed to encounter an imp with an aluminum kazoo in trade for my soul. This was endearing and funny at the same time.

Thanks, Alicia. I don’t think I’d be great at any musical contest. Of course that begs the question: if you were in a contest for your soul, what kind would you choose?

Dear David,
Clever story. I can always cound on you for a unique take on the prompt. 😉 And that’s one of my favorite musical pieces.

Yeah, I’ve always liked it too, for it’s frenetic pacing and storytelling. It’s funny, sometimes I’ll come up with an idea for a prompt and it seems so obvious that I’m afraid everyone else has had the same idea. Luckily our minds all work along different tracks. 🙂

Taking on the devil is a chancy thing to do!

yeah, even when it’s a minor one. Not something to mess around with, especially for an aluminum kazoo.

Clever spin on that song, David. I like your little AI Critter. Wouldn’t want to meet it in a dark alley, but in a fairy tale, ok.

Thanks, Brenda! Yeah, I wanted to go for a cute demon instead of a scary one. Makes him more pathetic. 🙂
