The writer Neil Gaiman accidentally misspelled the name Caroline in a book and wrote Coraline instead. It struck him as interesting and he eventually made a character and a whole book around that. It was a mistake but something good came of it.

I don’t suppose anyone loves making mistakes, but it’s nice when it ends up being beneficial. In fiction writing, this is good because it subverts expectations, meaning the outcome can surprise the reader. For example, a man accidentally punches his boss. Oops, I guess he’s about to get fired. No, because his boss is secretly an amateur boxer and is impressed by his arm. He offers him a job as a sparring partner. No one saw that coming. 🙂

  1. Love Neil Gaiman. His quote…a book is a dream that you hold in your hands is a favorite of mine. This is an interesting idea since when I write I make numerous blunders. I like the idea of recycling them the way that Gaiman did with Coraline. It’s actually a pretty sounding name. 🙂
