Probably a Phase
“It’s a dreamcatcher,” his son said.
“Ah,” Tim said, staring at the artistic horror. “Why are there chicken guts in it?”
“Because it’s an evil dreamcatcher. To curse people.”
It’s a phase, Tim thought. He’s going through a phase.
“Cool . . .” he said aloud. “How?”
“It uses a person’s possession to curse them!”
“Right . . . Then why are my keys woven into it?”
“Oh, sorry. Those are a placeholder. Do you feel cursed at all?”
Tim shrugged. “Disturbed, maybe?”
“Good!”
“Say, kiddo. Do you want to take up a sport maybe? Baseball?”
“Evil baseball?”
“Sure . . .” It’s gotta be a phase, he thought.

He’ll grow out of it, right? SURE!
Great fun take, David.

Just love the photo. Funny to think of baseball as evil. I guess we can throw in as American as Mom and Apple pie. You have the most creative imagination of anyone I know David. It never sleeps. 🙂

Thanks, Susannah. Hopefully this kid is not imaginative enough to try to make baseball evil. 🙂

Remember in that movie League of Their Own about a girls baseball team? Tom Hanks yells…there’s no crying in baseball. Don’t know why I just thought of that. A great film. 🙂

That was a good movie. Great casting, especially.

Yeah. Tom Hanks was in a career slump and it brought him back to life, thanks to Penny Marshall who hired him and directed the film.

Right…just a phase – said all parents of various evil doers…
Nicely done!

Yeah, really. That’s when it gets really worrying, if they don’t grow out of it.

Hilarious. And quite relatable as a parent.

Thanks, Surabhi. I’m not a parent myself but I was a teacher for a long time and have lots of nieces and nephews so I’ve got some experience with this.

Oblique reference to one of your students? In my old job I ran across a few…

I just made this up but now that I think of it, it probably could apply to some. I had one guy who would just write the Chinese character for death over and over again on his paper (that was in Korea). That was a bit disturbing.

I knew this kid.
He did outgrow it, btw.
Enjoyable read.
Thank you.

That’s good to know, Dawn. Probably gives hope to any parents going through that.

Dear David,
All three of my sons went through an “evil phase.” I’m happy to say that they seem to be functioning adults with good hearts. Your story actually brought back some memories. 😉
Shalom,
Rochelle

That’s good that they grew out of it. I’m sure I went through something like that as a kid too. I’ll have to ask my mom.

Oh dear! That was fun. And of course it’s just a phase… but the evil baseball better beware.

haha, you’d hope it’s just a phase. I have no idea what evil baseball would look like.
