A Study in Excitement
I’ve got a Spanish exam tomorrow, but of course my lame family has to go to the amusement park together. My academic future means nothing, I guess. Lead on, Mom.
I smuggle in a notebook to study while we wait in line. I pull it out again on the rollercoaster as we slowly climb. I need to get this vocab down.
Peligrosa . . . intelligent, maybe?
Tonto . . .
We tip over the top and drop.
Everyone’s screaming, so I can’t concentrate. Then I drop my notebook on the loop-the-loop and it hits someone further down.
Now I’m never going to pass. Thanks, Mom.

First off, I love Dale’s photo. They don’t call it an amusement park for nothing.
And David, the story is a riot. I can see the whole thing, how a kid would actually do this…cram for a test on a roller coaster. And the last line…
Now I’m never going to pass. Thanks, Mom.…is a slam dunk. you’re so good at these. 🙂

Thank you, my friend. I’m glad you liked it. It’s fun to write this kind of self-righteous sulky character. 🙂

Dangerous indeed. I enjoyed the subtle humour and how it’s all Mum’s fault. As it should be, he could have stood his ground and missed out on the amusement park rides. Really!

Thanks, James. Everything a kid does is justified in their own eyes, isn’t it? Although I guess it’s not just kids that do that.

Love this take, David! This kid is one of those rare ones… Of course it’s Mom’s fault… Lordy we mothers need broad shoulders to take so much blame… 😉

I think a mother’s sweetest revenge is having her kids grow up to have kids just like they were, haha. Yes, mothers take a lot at any age.

Oh gosh, Moms are the absolute worst, aren’t they? I can imagine my eldest being like this. Perfect bait and switch!

Querido David,
Peligrosa…intelligent? LOL. Perhaps. Studying on a roller coaster, definitely tonto. 😉 Perhaps he shouldn’t have left studying until the last minuto.

I’m glad you got the linguistic easter eggs there. It’s fun to put little jokes like that into writing. Yeah, definitely not very smart. Stay warm out there.

What if he didn’t act alone. His co-conspiritors came along and it rained notebooks over the entire carnival.

Now you’re talking. Let’s kick this absurd scenario up a notch. They’re hiding study notes all over the park for him maybe.

I like the passive aggressiveness in the italics. What a fun story!

Thanks, Joy. It was fun to write like that. 🙂

my take on the story was not that the student waited to the last minute to study, but instead, his family’s culture did not realize the seriousness of his studies and then of course we have his POV, with lame fam – and still trying to study – etc – it was a nice contarst to stories about parents that force kids to study when they want to go to the fair instead.

I guess we’ll never know for sure since we just have the one point of view. That’s a good way to think of it though.

Thanks Alicia. Yeah, hopefully not. We only get 100 words, so I ran out of room to say what happened with the dropped book, so let’s assume it was okay. 😉

I get a feeling the kid will thank her when he gets older and gets a bit of perspective, as we all do.
