First Day in the Trenches

The first day of school was over. A group of shell-shocked first-years sat huddled together in the back of the restaurant.

“I knew high school was hard, but . . .”

“The twelfth-graders were huge! I honestly feared for my life during first period.”

“One of them called me Fartin,” said one named Martin. “I mean, how can you compete with that kind of wit?”

“I don’t think I can last the week, let alone all year.”

A phone buzzed. “Ugh, it’s the principal. Time for the staff meeting.”

With that, the first-year teachers got up wearily and trudged back to the school.

Yesterday was the first day of class at my university so I’ve been insanely busy in the last few weeks. Hopefully by next week it’ll be a lot calmer.

I gotta say, with the number of teachers in my circle, I saw this one coming a mile away. 😉 Let’s come back to them come Christmas!

Fartin…what a great name. Sounds old English. Perspective as always, is the key.

Rochelle takes lovely photos, always. You are the rock star of flash fiction in my opinion David. 🙂

  5. Dear David,

I’ve no doubt this is heavily based on true story. Made me smile.

One day at a time, David, and it sounds like you’ve got a good cohort to commiserate with. What subject(s) do you teach?

Sounds about right. Poor Fartin, that’ll be his name until he dies, I’m afraid.

Having experienced several years of junior high boys entering my classroom with potty mouth foremost on their minds, I totally get this.
