Personally, I love trying new foods, although I’m sure even I would have my limits. In the TV show Star Trek: The Next Generation in the episode “A Matter of Honor”, Commander Riker is assigned to a Klingon ship and eats gagh, live serpent worms, to prove that he can fit in with the crew and is worthy of respect. Here, the food itself is not as important as the meaning behind eating it.
Story Prompt: June 22, 2026
Write a story about trying a new food
Since eating food is a pretty mundane activity usually, think of the stakes that might be involved with trying a new food. Maybe it’s possibly poisonous or there is some taboo about eating it. Maybe, like in the example above, it is about acceptance, or maybe just survival. Maybe it’s nothing more than being impulsive or expanding your boundaries. For example, in Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss, the whole conflict is just getting the character to try the food that he’s convinced he doesn’t like.
If you write a story for this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

I’m a Quaker in this area. I eat the same things all the time. starting with oatmeal, some toast then a coupla Oreos for dessert.
You made me think about Anthony Bourdain who died 8 years ago this month…the master of eating different foods across the globe. I loved when he said, when you go to Gramma’s house, you eat what Gramma makes. In other words, no complaints…just shut up and clean your plate. 🙂
