The First Sundeath

It was the first day.

Ever.

While exploring this new world, the woman noticed the sun was lower.

“It’s falling,” she said.

“It’s bleeding,” the man said. “See, its blood is spreading along the horizon.”

“This must be the end of the world.”

“It was a good life.”

The sun was gone. Darkness descended. They lay down, feeling their bodies losing energy. Clearly, they were dying.

*

The man awoke first. “Look!” he cried. “The sun is reborn. It’s on the other side again.”

“I feel refreshed as well. We must have been reborn, too. How many times will that happen?”

I was just imagining what it would be like if someone had never seen a sunset before.

  1. I’d sure like to be reborn. It’s a pity you can’t order it from Amazon. Love the photo as well as the graphic. 🙂

Oh man… maybe I have to change my thought process when I go to bed. Maybe this will allow me to sleep better and wake as refreshed as they did!

    Love this, David.

    1. I’m sure that simplicity wouldn’t last long. I wonder what you’d even dream about if you’d been alive for one day? Probably whatever babies dream about. I never feel very refreshed when I wake up but that might just be that I never get enough sleep.

You are probably right. And neither do I.

Science fiction authors Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg wrote a novel (based on Asimov’s short story) about a world with six suns that only experienced true night once in two millennia. So when the planet’s strange orbit allowed none of the six suns to appear in the sky, naturally things went haywire. https://www.amazon.com/Nightfall-Isaac-Asimov/dp/0553290991

    1. I haven’t read that one, but I should. Sounds like the Three-Body Problem with the chaotic orbits around multiple suns.

Nicely done! I imagine that could have been quite a shock the first time it happened…

    1. Yeah, really. Life doesn’t give us a manual, we just pick things up from those who came before us and if there aren’t any of those…

Despite the philosophical topic, this made me laugh. Imagine, being reborn thousands of times.

    1. Glad you liked it. I like to think about that kind of thing. I’m writing a sci-fi story now with a character whose mind hasn’t slept in centuries but has multiple bodies she cycles through that rest between waking. Lots of fun speculation.

David, I like where the image took you. “Morning has broken, like the first morning.” Love the idea of it being experienced literally.
