Story Prompt: January 26, 2026

Write a story where the character finds something in their food

The stereotypical version of this is a customer in a restaurant finding a fly in their soup. However, try to think of where else this could take place (at a friend’s house, in a military cafeteria, cooking for themselves at home) and what they could find (something creepy, weird, funny, mysterious, gross). It’s up to you.

If you write a story for this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

Stay warm if you’re somewhere getting lots of winter weather like we are here.

  1. You made me think of Julie Andrews in the film Victor Victoria when she puts a waterbug in her food so she doesn’t have to pay her bill. But the waiter doesn’t buy it. That’s when Toddie, played wonderfully by Robert Preston comes to her rescue. Great film.

I love the picture of pancakes except now I want a stack. 🙂

    1. Right? They make me want to have pancakes. I’ve very rarely found anything in my food. Never a hair, I think. That would be worse than a bug.

      1. I may have found a hair or two but hey, it’s Noo Yawk after all.

    1. Thanks, Nancy. I loved this. Very creepy. I’ve scheduled my response to it this Tuesday. Thanks so much for participating so faithfully. I don’t always write one myself but I’m going to from now on and post it the next Tuesday.
