Muse on Monday – November 10, 2025

I’ve always loved detailed models and have had a fascination with stories like The Borrowers, where tiny people live inside the walls of a normal-sized house. Part of the fun is seeing how they overcome obstacles that are easy for us (getting up onto the table is like climbing a mountain, for example), but the most fun is seeing how they reuse items (e.g. using a needle for a sword or a toothpaste cap for a cup). A big part of the conflict, though, is keeping out of sight of the big people.

Usually, if there is a story with characters of vastly different sizes, the power is all with the larger ones since they are physically bigger. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. The smaller ones could have an advantage in magic (if it’s that kind of a story), technology, or just sheer numbers (if I had to bet on a side in a war between humans and ants, I don’t think I’d bet on the humans for survivability).

Story Prompt: November 10, 2025

Write a story with characters of vastly different sizes.

I’ll admit, this kind of story will probably be fantasy or science fiction, at least if you’re thinking of size differences like in The Borrowers. However, on a lesser scale, this could be the difference between someone 7 feet tall and someone 4 feet tall. That’s up to you.

If you write a story with this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

Have a great week and stay warm. At least it’s snowing here.
