Persephone’s Marvelous One-Bug Band

Persephone took the stage during the annual Battle of the Bugs. Being a millipede, it took her a while. She heard snickers. The contest usually belonged to the musically-blessed orthopterans: crickets and grasshoppers and such. Katydid Perry had won three years in a row.

“What are you playing?” the judges asked.

“Beeethoven’s 9th.”

The crowd murmured.

Persephone raised a violin. Then another. 60 violins, 20 violas, 25 cellos and 15 double basses in total, plus a full percussion section near the end of her abdomen. 120 bows were raised. The air shook.

The era of the pedeharmonic orchestra had begun.

Persephone is named after Eumillipes persephone, the longest millipede ever discovered.

  1. The first thing I thought of was Persephone was the name of Maise Dobb’s father’s horse.

Made me smile. It’s such a great name.

I SIMPLY LOVE THE BATTLE OF THE BUGS. This is one of your very best. 🙂

  7. Dear David,

That must’ve been quite a sight to see as well as one helluva a one milipede orchestra. Delightful story.

    Shalom,
