Darkness falls. Color fades. All that is left are shadows and silhouettes. Sounds become sharper, smells take on new meaning.
It can be a challenge to write a story that takes place in darkness, similar to the challenge of writing from the perspective of a character who is blind. For one thing, the conflicts are different, or at least heightened. Suddenly, just getting across a large room might be difficult. This is made worse if the characters are being pursued or trying to find something.
Story Prompt: August 25, 2025
Write a story that takes place in darkness.
If you write a story with this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

Happy Independence Day if you happen to be from Uruguay!

David, one of the scariest movies I have ever seen (with no violence at all) is “Wait Until Dark” starring Audrey Hepburn. If you haven’t seen it, you must. It’s truly edge-of-your-seat viewing.

Yeah Nancy, she was great in that. And it was scary.

Yes, I did see that movie a long time ago. That’s a great thriller and so good at ratcheting up the suspense with no violence as you said. I wasn’t even thinking of that when I posted this, but that’s a great example of extra challenges due to darkness (or advantages if you’re blind).

Exactly. When a movie stays with you for years after viewing, you realize how impactful it really was. I saw it again recently and it still got to me, even though I knew what was going to happen. A very fine movie with excellent acting.

Thanks! Might as well do some creative writing, even if I’m only introducing the prompt. 🙂
