The novel Leviathan, by Scott Westerfield, takes place in World War I. The situation is the same as the history we know except that the British have living machines made through genetic engineering and the Germans have steampunk mechanical machines, like walking fortresses.
This is what is known as alternate history, where we imagine history but with a twist. What would it be like if the Axis powers had won World War II (The Man in the High Castle, by Philip K. Dick) or more fanciful ones like, what if Abraham Lincoln was a vampire hunter in the movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter?
One of the most iconic ways of showing alternate history is with a symbol, like a building or monument of some kinds (think of the Statue of Liberty in the Planet of the Apes movie or the slightly sillier ape version of the Lincoln Memorial in the 2001 remake of the same movie).

Story Prompt: June 23, 2025

If you write a story with this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.
Have a great week! Happy writing.

I’d choose either the Brooklyn Bridge or the Chrysler Building. Nice seeing the Lincoln Memorial. 🙂

Those are very iconic structures in New York, to be sure. Now, what would be different about them?

I’m not sure what you’re asking me. But they are surely iconic.

Oh, I just was trying to imagine what the Brooklyn Bridge or Chrysler Building might be like in an alternate timeline. 🙂

I’ll bet they’d talk, and maybe even date. The Grace Kelly of Architecture and Cary Grant of bridges. 🙂
