The novel Leviathan, by Scott Westerfield, takes place in World War I. The situation is the same as the history we know except that the British have living machines made through genetic engineering and the Germans have steampunk mechanical machines, like walking fortresses.
This is what is known as alternate history, where we imagine history but with a twist. What would it be like if the Axis powers had won World War II (The Man in the High Castle, by Philip K. Dick) or more fanciful ones like, what if Abraham Lincoln was a vampire hunter in the movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter?
One of the most iconic ways of showing alternate history is with a symbol, like a building or monument of some kinds (think of the Statue of Liberty in the Planet of the Apes movie or the slightly sillier ape version of the Lincoln Memorial in the 2001 remake of the same movie).
