Lots of stories have a group of friends as the main characters. One of them might be the main character with the others as supporting characters or they might all be treated equally.

Stories with groups have two different areas for conflict: the external one where the group works towards some external goal (e.g. the Scooby-Doo gang solving a mystery or the Fellowship of the Ring helping Frodo get the one ring to Mordor) and then the internal one dealing with the dynamics in the group. This might not be big in some stories but is a source of potential conflict (e.g. competition, jealousy, factions, etc.)

Story Prompt: May 5, 2025

Write a story about a group of friends

If you write a story with this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

Happy Children’s Day (Korea), Cinco de Mayo (Mexico), or my sister Anna’s birthday!

  1. I see me and my friends Camille and Joanne seated at the Carlyle in my drinking days…shoes slipped off, shimmying our shoulders to the piano player. Yeah, can see this like it’s happening. 🙂

    1. yeah, there’s nothing like a comfortable group of friends, just hanging out. Reminds me of times in Korea.
