Hello and happy Memorial Day if you are in the United States.

It’s pretty common to have an elderly relative, often an aunt or uncle, in a story as a helper character. They are good sources of mystery (either something they know or something in their house), a source of sudden wealth when they die and leave something to the main character, or a mentor who can train the main character in what they need to know for the story. Obviously that’s an oversimplification, but these are not uncommon.

I want you to think about this type of character in a different way though. Make them the hero of the story, or the sidekick, or even the villain.

Story Prompt: May 27, 2024

Write a story with an elderly relative in a non-stereotypical role

If you write a story for this, you can send me a link to your story if you’ve posted it somewhere or send it to me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week. I will post my story for this prompt next week as well.

Good luck and happy writing! Have a wonderful week.

  1. I love the idea of a mentor, someone you can go to to explain what isn’t too clear. And why not make her wealthy. too. And maybe she was the bell of the ball in her youth, still remembered how sought after she was by an endless buffet of swains…

like Scarlet in the opening of Gone With The Wind at the 12 Oaks Ball handing out favors…yes, you can get me more punch. And you, sit by me while he’s gone, then you could get me some. I just saw Scarlet older, telling this story to a niece. 🙂

    1. That’s why that’s such a common idea, since that is what tends to happen in real life too.

      1. It’s a great premise. You always post a good one since ideas are hard to come by for any writer. 🙂
