Every city has its own personality. Part of that is based on where it is—if it has mountains or lakes or is by the ocean or is on an island—but it goes beyond that. Even cities that seem very similar have subtle differences based on their culture and their “feel”. You may have to live there a while to tell, though. Think about some places you have lived.

In writing, we call giving a personality to a non-living thing personification. It is a way to make something non-living into a character in the story, even if it doesn’t speak.

On that note, here is your challenge for the week.

Story Prompt: March 25, 2024

Write a story with a city as a character

Unless this is a very fantastical story, the city won’t speak or move at all, so it is up to you to show the character of the city. One way is with descriptive language or through the people there in general.

If you write a story for this, you can send me a link to your story if you’ve posted it somewhere or send it to me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week. I will post my story for this prompt next week as well.

Good luck and happy writing! Come back next Monday for another story prompt.

  1. Gotham…like in Batman, but it’s what they call New York as well. If a city ever had a personality, it’s the Big Apple that swaggers like nobody’s business. Love the graphic. 🙂
