Muse on Monday – December 4, 2023

Happy Monday and welcome to the last month of the year.

One of my hobbies is geography, and I like to find out the origins of place names. Sometimes it is obvious, such as places named after a famous person (e.g. Lincoln, Nebraska) or from geographical features (e.g. Grand Rapids, Michigan). But then there are others that are difficult to know where they came from. Some examples are Whynot, North Carolina, Hot Coffee, Mississippi, or Embarrass, Minnesota. These are all from the US, but every country has interesting names (Australia, definitely).

There might be origin stories for these with varying degrees of legendary status, but try making up your own story.

Story Prompt: December 4, 2023

Write a possible origin story for a place with an unusual name.

You can send me a link to your story if you’ve posted it somewhere or send it to me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

Good luck and happy writing! Come back next Monday for another story prompt.
