Happy Monday and welcome to a new month. November is a month of transitions: between fall and winter and between the dark Halloween season and the brighter, more festive Christmas/New Year season.
It is also the penultimate month of the year. Penultimate is a great word, meaning second last. We tend to give a lot of attention on the first and last things, but not so much on the second last of things (Gary Larson made a joke about this in The Far Side). So we’re going to use that idea in a first-line story prompt for this week.
Story Prompt: November 6, 2023
Write a story with the first line: “I was always picked second last for dodgeball in gym class. That eventually saved my life.”
You can send me a link to your story if you’ve posted it somewhere or send it to me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.
Good luck and happy writing! Come back next Monday for another story prompt.

I became much more tolerant and kind to others who felt passed over as I did. It’s how I became an empath.
That would be the first two lines of my story.
Your graphic has simply put me over the moon. 🙂
