It’s the beginning of October, which is traditionally a time when people think about scary things, due to Halloween coming at the end of the month. There are many different types of scary stories. Some examples might be:
- Supernatural (ghosts, spirits, demons, etc.)
- Aliens (things from outer space, other dimensions, hidden places on Earth)
- Nature (killer animals, viruses, etc.)
- Science Gone Wrong (think the Island of Dr. Moreau or anything to do with killer robots or biotechnology)
- Bad People (serial killers, insane murderers, stalkers, etc.)
These are all types of horror stories, but there are also thrillers, which can be scary but are mostly just tense. There is a lot of overlap.
Maybe you’re not the kind of person who likes to read or write scary stories. If that’s the case, I would say that horror stories don’t have to be gory or graphic. Sometimes it’s just the mood of the story. After all, there is nothing more scary than the unknown.
So, this month for Muse on Monday we will walk on the dark side a little.
Story Prompt: October 2, 2023
Write a scary story about technology.
This can be something dealing with computers or genetics or anything else you can think of. You can send me a link to your story if you’ve posted it somewhere or send it to me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.
Good luck and happy writing! Come back next Monday for another story prompt.

I just saw my Mac iBook chasing me around the apartment since he truly runs my life. I miss my Gateway that was anything but a bully. I learned on it…my first PC. Like having a teacher you really liked. And scary stories. Hmm…must think about that since real life has been scary enough. I love the graphic. I always look forward to it. 🙂

Yeah, real life has enough mundane terrors of its own. Sometimes I think that’s why people like more farfetched frights.
