You’ve probably heard of Chat GPT, which it is the most popular AI chatbot at this moment. I’ve noticed a trend lately of people trying to write books through AI, meaning the AI writes most of it for them. As a writer, this kind of defeats the point of writing: it would like having a computer watch a movie for you if you didn’t have time. But that is a debate we will have for a long time, I’m sure.

I won’t be letting AI write for me, but just for fun, I thought I would ask Chat GPT to give me a some opening sentences for a short story. I asked it to make them engaging and quirky. Here are three of them:

1. In the small town of Whimsyville, where socks had a tendency to disappear into parallel universes, Sally woke up to find her left foot snugly wrapped in a polka-dotted oven mitt.

2. The day Granny Gertrude turned 97, a mischievous squirrel named Mr. Fluffernutter decided it was the perfect time to steal her dentures.

3. In a world where gravity was a matter of personal choice, Roger found himself floating above his high school reunion, desperately trying to avoid awkward conversations with former classmates.

Story Prompt: September 25, 2023

Write a story using one of the three sentences above as the opening sentence.

These are definitely weird, but give it a try if you would like. You can send me a link to your story if you’ve posted it somewhere or send it to me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

Good luck and happy writing! Come back next Monday for another story prompt.

  1. You don’t need anyone to write for you. I think he’s there for a wannabe who’s having a tough time getting jump-started.

You have to have the written word already in your soul. No one knows that better than you David. I love the whole premise though. Inventive, cyberly-current. You hit all the bases on this one. 🙂

    1. Thanks, my friend. I don’t really think that AI-generated writing will overtake human-made writing. However, what it could do is flood the market so that it’s harder to find good quality writing. We’ll see.
