Sugar Sand

“It hurts.”

“I’m sure, sweetie. You’re doing so good.”

The ambulance corners hard.

“Ow!”

“Almost there. Where were you going? When the car hit you?”

“Store. Getting candy.”

“Candy, nice. Deep breath for me now.”

“Hurts.”

“I know, honey. Hey, you ever hear of sugar sand?”

“No.”

“There are beaches in Hawaii full of it. You can eat it straight off the ground.”

“Really?”

“Oh, sure!”

“Where’s my Mom?”

“She’s meeting you there. You hold on, sugar.”

“Ow! Ow!”

“I know, sweetie. Okay, here’s the hospital. I’ll come visit you soon. Get you some of that sugar sand. Okay, honey?”

  1. Wow…now that’s a picture to be inspired from. Of course now I want Goobers and M&Ms. And yes, your line about the hospital is pretty right on since, sugar is the new cyanide. And a Honolulu to you. Hawaii, now that’s a place I’d like to recoup in. You are so great at these David. 🙂

      2. yeah, it’s going okay. Always busy but a lot better than in August. We have students arriving every 2 months, so it’s never really slow.

Reassurance is essential for the injured, although being far fetched about sugar sands does offer hope that everything will be okay.
