To Be Struck by Lightning

Mikki had never been struck by lightning, which was a shame. She’d heard it gave you such a nice energy boost.

She craved that now. She was 48,564 meters from home and her reserves stood at 6%. She chewed two 9-volt batteries with her tungsten teeth, sucking out every possible milliamp.

Suddenly, like a text notification from God, the clouds rumbled. There was a flash, then another.

Lightning arced down . . .

. . . four meters away.

Just as disappointment formed in her mind, the cut power lines from the struck pole fell, landing squarely on Mikki’s back.

Ah, she sighed. There we go.

    1. That’s a great way to look at it. Now they just need to make power stations that rely on lightning and people will start praying for thunderstorms.

Like a protein bar or a shot of Red Bull.

Dale’s photo is amazing. I always told her she should take her photography more seriously. I can see Rochelle agrees.

Also love…text notification from God. Imagine really getting one. Now that would beat all.

You remain the master of Flash Fiction my friend. 🙂

    1. It’s hard to imagine lightning as a shot in the arm, as it were. I like the text notification from God line too. Was imagining a vibrating phone magnified a million times. 🙂

I think we realise there is not a sufficient number of recharging points for all the electric cars being planned. At least Mikke got a sudden shot, although she should expect another soon.

    1. Yeah, not a very good plan to rely on acts of God to get you to the next charging point. Clearly this world needs better infrastructure. 🙂

Love the illustration you’ve added to this, David, and the story itself is a great new take.

    1. Thanks! Yes, AI is here, although it’s still an uneasy relationship I have with it. It’s got its uses as long as it doesn’t totally take over everything we do.

So many great lines in this. I love the character and the idea of her curiosity about lightning strikes. Really clever. Also love the ending – I can hear her sighing.

    1. Thanks, Dale. Yes, I can’t imagine enjoying getting shot through with high voltage electricity but each to their own.
