Happy New Year from the Green-Walled Treehouse!
We’re going to start 2023 off with a bang by talking about action. Action scenes are inherently high tension, so they should be exciting. They should make the reader want to keep reading. Sentences are often short. They use a lot of verbs since verbs are about doing. This all has the effect of speeding up the narrative.
Action stories don’t have to be huge, like a battle scene or a James Bond-style chase scene. It could be a pickpocket on a bus hardly moving at all but it’s still more about doing than thinking.

Like the line…They should make the reader want to keep reading. That’s such a great note, to keep your reader’s attention. Sometimes we writers so lost in ourselves, forget about them, like inviting guests to dinner then leaving them to dine alone.

Thank you, my friend. Maybe it’s because I used to be a teacher or because I sometimes write kids stories, but I imagine gathering listeners around and telling them the story.
