If you want to be a writer, it is good to read a lot, not only the kinds of stories you want to write, but a wide variety of stories. Reading a lot of different kinds of stories will help you get experience with how other authors write and the different techniques and styles they use.

The same is true for writing. You might usually write one type of story, but it is good to try writing other types of stories too. This will give you experience with many types of stories and you may find other types you enjoy writing as well. For example, if you write stories for adults, try writing a story for kids. If you write scary stories mostly, try writing a funny story, or vice versa.
