Sometimes a story is right on the surface of the words: a story of a bank robbery is just that and nothing more. However, a story could also be about something underneath the main story. For example, a story of a boy doing his homework could really be about his stress at living in a high crime neighborhood (I’ll post this story next week). The subtext in this type of story is more important than the surface story.

Story Prompt: October 3, 2022

Write a story where the real story is only hinted at in the words.

If you’re not sure how to do this, look up examples of subtext online to get some ideas.

If you want to share your story, you can either email me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com or submit it at the link here. I’d love to publish your story as well.

  1. I love the example you give about the boy doing his homework while he’s possibly filled with angst. There’s always an inner life in all of us that only we know of. Such a great concept to share David. 🙂
