Dialogue is one of the main parts of fiction writing, along with exposition and description. How much of each is in your story depends on the type of story you are writing, but it is possible with a very short story to write a story completely of dialogue. This could be either talking or through texts or any other type of communication.

Story Prompt: September 26, 2022

Write a story using nothing but dialogue.

You would not want to make the story very long since without description, it has the effect of feeling like two people are talking in a void. Usually 100 words is plenty. Also, do not have more than two people talking or it will be endlessly confusing.

If you want to share your story, you can either email me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com or submit it at the link here. I’d love to publish your story as well.

  1. It’s my very favorite thing to write…exchanges between characters. You can be hilarious as well as poignant. You really develop who they are by what they say. The writer gives them their voice and then they run with it, as if he were driving initially but then they grabbed the wheel.

    Love the graphic. 🙂
