A lot of art is about contrast and that is true for fiction as well. Putting two very different things next to each other helps us to see and understand both of them better. For example, we can understand being rich and being poor better in a story with both rich and poor people in it than a story about just one group. After all, one of the best ways to show what something is is to show what it is not.

This week’s prompt:

Write a story about two completely opposite things.

This can be two people, two places or anything else. The point is to show the contrast between them.

If you’re stuck, try going to a random word generator and generating some adjectives. Then think about the opposites of those. Thinking of story ideas around these pairs (e.g. brave-cowardly, dusty-clean, fretful-calm) can help to get the creative wheels turning.
