Human interaction makes up a huge part of the conflict in stories. After all, as humans, we are the most interesting subject for our stories. This conflict could come from having different values, misunderstandings from language and culture, competition for resources or lots of other reasons.

It’s hard enough to negotiate with someone in good faith but have you ever had a situation where you knew someone was lying to you? What should you do? Confront them, let it pass, use that knowledge to your advantage, or something else? Lots of great story possibilities there.

Story Prompt: March 16, 2026

Write a story where one character knows another one is lying to them.

If you write a story for this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

  1. The first thing I thought of was, it’s in the eyes. Also when people look away as they speak tells you there’s another component to what’s being said.

Had a flash of Peter Lorre in the film Casablanca. Talk about lying eyes, like the Eagle’s song. No one lied so well as he did.

As for Muse, she never stops musing. She’s a cyber coquette if there ever was one. 🙂
