Have you ever read a story where an animal is a character in the story? These aren’t always fantasy stories or children’s stories (although they often are). There are several ways you can use an animal as a character in a story.

  1. All the characters are animals (e.g. Watership Down)
  2. One character is a sentient animal in the human world but this is seen as normal (e.g. Stuart Little)
  3. The main character is an animal but doesn’t speak and lives in a realistic world (e.g. The Call of the Wild)

Story Prompt: February 23, 2026

Write a story with an animal as a character

You can pick any of the types above, depending on how realistic you want the story to be. The main thing is that the animal is actually a character, not just in the story. This means that we see things at least partially from its point of view and it has its own feelings and thoughts.

If you write a story for this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

Have a wonderful week of writing.
