Muse on Monday – June 2, 2025

There is a quote by the science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke that goes “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” This means that while a gun or a lightbulb might seem like magic to someone from thousands of years ago, a tractor beam or teleporter might seem like magic to us, since it is way too advanced for us to understand.

High technology is a great exercise in creativity for fiction writers since anything is possible if you can imagine it. You don’t need to know how it works, but you do need to know the rules it works by so you use it consistently in the story (for example, if you decide that teleportation only works on a teleporter pad, then you can’t have a person in the story suddenly teleport in the middle of a forest).

Story Prompt: June 2, 2025

Write a story about one piece of very advanced technology

If you write a story with this prompt, send me a link to your story on your own site, either in the comments or at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week.

Happy June!

  1. This is certainly your area to write about. Colossal U comes to mind.

Was just perusing Stephen King’s book, On Writing, and he described his collection of books as an hilarious stew.

Made me think of you since that sums up your imagination as well…how it has no bounds whatsoever.

Wish NASA read Muse on Monday. Now that would be interesting to hear what they’d have to say. 🙂

    1. yeah, this type of thing is something I love to write. And yes, my shelves are a hilarious multi-lingual stew too. Everything from the Koran to teen girl comics in Korean and everything between.

      1. But isn’t that a great way to describe it? And you’re in good company with Mr. King. 🙂
