The duel: it is a staple of action movies, like the standoff in a western movie. At the climax of the story or movie, the hero and villain face off, one on one. Of course this doesn’t have to be a physical confrontation. It could be a debate or a chess game or even two generals controlling armies. In any case, there are two people engaged in direct conflict. For this type of scene or story, there are the following elements:

  • Two characters (they do not have to be good/bad, but just in direct conflict)
  • A stage or battlefield
  • A winner and a loser (they could reconcile afterwards but one person is the clear winner)

Story Prompt: March 31, 2025

  1. When you think actual duels really took place and often, it’s hard to imagine. I think two people having a face-off in a divorce court or a trial is very duel-like. Of course I always think of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr on that bluff in Weehawken. I’ve been there. I remember feeling chills. You always come up with the best prompts. Welcome back MUSE. Missed you last week. 🙂
