Muse on Monday – August 26, 2024

What is the most alone you have ever been? I remember one day when I hiked up a snowy mountain in Korea and did not see another person the whole day. This is not loneliness, just being alone. Ironically, the loneliest I have every felt is when I was in a crowd of people where everyone else was with friends and I wasn’t.

There are many stories about solitude, from stories where one person battles nature alone to ones where the story takes place mostly inside a person’s head. Stories about solitude usually have one character, so there should either be internal dialogue, meaning the character talking to themselves, or the narrator will tell what they are thinking and feeling, or the actions they take should give a clue to what they are thinking. Stories about solitude could incorporate loneliness as a point of conflict, but do not have to.

Story Prompt: August 26, 2024

Write a story about solitude

If you write a story for this, you can send me a link to your story if you’ve posted it somewhere or send it to me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week. I will post my story for this prompt next week as well.

Good luck and happy writing! Have a great week. 🙂

  1. How I love this David, being the Greta Garbo that I am who only wanted to be left alone, no one fully understanding.

What you shared about feeling lonely in a crowd I can really relate to. It almost feels like you’re sleep walking in your own dream, no one else a participant. But what I’ve come to know to be true is, to master solitude is a great skill since, ultimately, we’re all alone anyway.

I’ve so missed Muse. Very happy that she’s back. 🙂

    1. Thank you, my friend. Yes, the difference between being alone and being lonely can be a thin line sometimes. Thanks for reading, as always.
