When we think of a war story, we usually think of fighting. However, there are a lot of stories that take place in a time of war that are far away from any battlefield. Here are some ways:

• having a family member in the fighting
• building weapons or materials for the war
• living under the threat of invasion or attack
• suffering shortages because of the war
• spying or catching spies to help the war
• developing technology for the war

How much the war overshadows the story depends on how much the characters or the people they love are affected by it. Any of the points above can lead to a lot of tension and conflict depending on how high the stakes are.

Write a story that takes place during a war, without any fighting in it.
