Can you believe that February is almost over? This winter has been going fast, at least for me.
I’m currently spending the week with a group of people with various disabilities. It’s been a wonderful time so far and it is interesting to see people’s personalities displayed either through a disability or in spite of it. In the end, we each have our own challenges, but we are all the same in our wants and needs.
It can be a challenge to write a story with a character with a disability. Of course, all characters should have flaws and challenges, but a serious disability will have a big effect on the story. This can be a physical disability like being in a wheelchair or being blind, or an intellectual disability.
It is very important that if you do write a story about a person with a disability, that you do not rely on assumptions or stereotypes. I wrote a story once about a blind girl and found two blind students to interview for it. It was very enlightening since I learned a lot I never knew about how they lived their lives.
Story Prompt: February 26, 2024
Write a story about a person with a disability. If you do not have experience with it, do some research or talk to someone with that disability to make sure your portrayal is accurate.
You can send me a link to your story if you’ve posted it somewhere or send it to me at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit your story here for a chance to have it published on the site next week. I will post my story for this prompt next week as well.
Good luck and happy writing! Come back next Monday for another story prompt.

This disability prompt is a little too close to home for me. I wish I was warned. I do love the graphic though.
