Muse on Monday – June 26, 2023

Think about somewhere you go often. Work is the most common place for me, obviously, but probably the next is Panera since I go there every week to write. That’s a bit big to get to know the people well, but I’ve written at other coffee shops where you get to know everyone there: the staff and the regulars. It becomes the setting and characters for all kinds of stories.

This is pretty common in TV shows, to base a show around one location. The most common is a workplace, such as a hospital, police station, radio station or somewhere else with a lot of possibility for conflict, but any place is possible, whether it be a church, bar, yacht club, car garage, etc. Think of somewhere you know well. For instance, I don’t know anything about working in a restaurant, but I could tell some good stories about an international admissions office in a university.

Story Prompt: June 26, 2023

Write a story that takes place in a setting you know well.

You don’t have to use real people if you don’t want to, but you can take inspiration from experiences you have and real people you know.

If you want to share your story with me, leave a comment or send me an email at info@greenwalledtreehouse.com. You can also submit it at the link here.

  1. This is a great prompt. I could use Central Park, the Library. Even an AA meeting I go too. Yeah, starting any story with an environment helps frame what you’re about to tell us. Great theme, as usual.

    1. you have so many wonderful locations you use for your pieces. I feel like I’ve been to all of them for years.

      1. It’s like, and this might sound frivolous, but remember who’s saying it 🙂 It’s kinda like putting on your underwear before deciding what dress, or pair’s a pants to wear. It’s one’s beginning. I so love Muse on Monday. I see her…yes, it must be a she, she’s so wise…in a cozy robe, sipping coffee in bed as she channels happily. 🙂
